HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is conducting a maritime demonstration of collision avoidance and remote control of autonomous ships.
On July 18th of this year, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held the 3rd Industrial Convergence Regulatory Special Deliberation Committee for 2024 and reviewed and approved 44 regulatory sandbox projects, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ autonomous ship maritime demonstration.
A regulatory sandbox is a system in which the government provides special exemptions from current regulations to companies, thereby supporting them to quickly challenge new industries in limited areas.
In this review, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries received approval for performance demonstration of collision avoidance and remote control of autonomous ships.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will equip an 8,000 TEU container ship built at the Ulsan yard with HD Hyundai’s autonomous navigation system and will autonomously avoid collisions with other ships in the waters off Ulsan on Monday, November 4.
The ship will also remotely control the speed and direction of the demonstration vessel at the HD Hyundai GRC located in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.
Previously, it was difficult to inspect ships for autonomous navigation systems, and there was no legal basis for land-based mariners to control ships under remote control, making autonomous navigation demonstrations impossible.
However, regulatory sandbox approval has made maritime demonstrations possible.
Based on the data accumulated through this offshore demonstration, Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to lead the international standards for autonomous ships.
