Hapag-Lloyd, One Of The World’s Largest Shippers, Orders 24 New Container Ships

Hapag-Lloyd, the world’s fifth-biggest container shipping company, has ordered 24 container ships equipped with liquified gas dual-fuel engines.

The company has invested around $4 Billion to modernize its fleet and reduce emissions.

The vessels will feature ammonia-ready technology, making them suitable for future green fuels and are expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2029.

The order has been split between two major Chinese shipyards. Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group will construct 12 ships, each with a capacity of 16,800 TEU, to expand Hapag-Lloyd’s existing service routes.

New Times Shipbuilding Company Ltd. will build the remaining 12 vessels, each with a capacity of 9,200 TEU, to gradually replace the old vessels in the company’s fleet.

Together, the new ships will add a total capacity of 312,000 TEU to Hapag Lloyd’s fleet.

These vessels, equipped with low-emission, high-pressure liquefied gas dual-fuel engines, are fuel-efficient and will offer a variety of green fuel options, including biomethane.

The use of biomethane in new engines is expected to reduce CO₂e emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional systems.

The ships will be capable of future conversions to ammonia-based fuel, which will help the company achieve its decarbonization goals.

Per the company, the investment is one of the largest in its recent history.

Hapag Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen said that the upgraded fleet would give the company a competitive advantage by offering clients a high-quality global product through increased operational capacity and efficiency.

The company aims for a 30% decrease in fleet emissions by 2030 compared to 2022, as it plans to achieve net-zero fleet operations by 2045 in compliance with the 1.5-degree target set by the Paris Agreement.

Apart from the new builds, Hapag Lloyd has taken additional measures to reduce emissions, like slow steaming, retrofitting existing vessels, and using new propulsion technologies and alternative fuels.

Hapag Lloyd operates a fleet of 287 modern container ships capable of transporting 2.2 million TEU, making it one of the world’s largest container shipping operators and the largest fleet under the German flag.
