Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Christens & Launches New LNG-Powered RO/RO Vessel

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, christened and launched the TRANS HARMONY EMERALD, a new LNG-powered roll-on/roll-off (RO/RO) vessel.

The ceremony was held at the Enoura Plant of MHI’s Shimonoseki Shipyard in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

This is the second of two vessels that Toyofuji Shipping Co., Ltd ordered to reduce their fleet’s environmental impact.

The TRANS HARMONY EMERALD is set to begin service on Toyofuji Shipping’s Asian routes, and it is expected to be handed over in June 2025 after completing outfitting and sea trials.

The vessel is 195 meters long and 30.6 meters wide, with a gross tonnage of 49,500 tons, and it can transport up to 3,000 passenger cars.

This ship is powered by high-performance dual-fuel engines that can operate on either LNG or diesel fuel. These engines help to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 25% compared to ships using fuel oil while also lowering sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions to nearly zero.

The TRANS HARMONY EMERALD is the second ship in a series for Toyofuji Shipping after the launch of the TRANS HARMONY GREEN.

The first ship is expected to be delivered in January 2025.
