Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has officially joined the e-NG Coalition, a global alliance working to fasten the development and adoption of e-methane, a next-generation fuel designed to reduce carbon emissions.
The company’s participation was announced on March 1, 2025. The total number of e-NG Coalition members has increased to 20.
The alliance aims to establish a stable international supply chain for e-methane while promoting environmental standards and collaboration among industry players involved in its production and distribution.
What is E-Methane and Why Does It Matter?
E-methane is a synthetic carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen fuel. It is gaining interest as a cleaner alternative to conventional fossil fuels due to its low environmental impact.
One of its biggest advantages is that it can be used in existing LNG-fueled vessels without costly modifications, making it a practical solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in shipping.
MOL has been a major player in the LNG transport industry for over 40 years. The company, with its expertise in ocean transport liquefied CO2, plans to contribute to the growth of e-methane as a marine fuel and support the establishment of a global supply chain for synthetic fuels.
This aligns with MOL’s BLUE ACTION 2035 management plan, which prioritises environmental initiatives. The company is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The coalition’s ultimate goal is to promote e-methane as a key component of a carbon-neutral society.
