LPG Tanker Runs Aground Off Pattaya’s Coast, Residents & Tourists Panic

An LPG tanker ran aground near Koh Larn, off Pattaya City’s coast, in the early hours of March 25, 2025. There were concerns of a gas leak spread, but authorities confirmed that the vessel was empty.

The tanker, identified as, NP Bangpakong (3,996 dwt), is operated by SC Group Holding Co. Ltd, and was en route from Chachoengsao’s Bang Pakong District, to Rayong’s Map Ta Phut Port, when it became stranded on the rocky shoreline at Laem Wan near Ta Waen Beach at approximately 2:25 am.

Authorities responded swiftly to assess the situation. Upon inspection, officials confirmed that the double-hulled vessel had grounded its ballast tank, which prevented any hazardous leaks.

The vessel’s captain later reported that he had maneuvered sharply to avoid a fishing boat, leading to the grounding.

Residents and tourists panicked upon discovering the stranded tanker, with many fearing a possible explosion due to its LPG-carrying capabilities.

However, officials reassured the public that there was no risk, as the vessel’s tanks were empty at the time of the incident.

Despite this, concerns remain about potential environmental damage, particularly to the coral reefs near the site. SC Group Holding released a statement accepting full responsibility for the incident, attributing to its operational negligence.

The company assured full cooperation with authorities in their investigation and legal processes. They also vowed to take corrective actions, including stricter safety measures and enhanced operational protocols to prevent similar accidents.

Efforts to refloat the vessel are already underway.

The company has deployed a tugboat from Map Ta Phut, along with a team of engineers and technicians, to assess the damage and assist in the recovery operation.

Initial surveys showed possible damage to the ballast tanks, but there were no breaches in the cargo tanks.

The Pattaya Regional Harbor Office has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations.

Meanwhile, SC Group Holding has also committed to compensating any affected parties. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to safeguard both environmental and public safety.
