The Panama Canal has announced the launch of a NetZero Slot, a dedicated transit slot for vessels with low-carbon emissions to achieve net zero emissions by 2050
It aims to encourage shipping companies to choose cleaner fuels and energy-efficient technologies.
According to Advisory to Shipping No. A-07-2025, the NetZero Slot will be introduced in phases, starting October 5, 2025, with a weekly slot available for Neopanamax vessels that meet strict low-emission criteria.
Instead of being auctioned, this slot will be awarded through a competition in Period 1A, help 30 days before the transit date.
Vessels must be equipped with dual-fuel engines that operate on fuel with a carbon intensity of less than 75 gCO2(e)/MJ, measured from extraction to combustion (Well to Wake or WtW).
The second phase of this initiative, planned for 2026, will have more specifications, which will be announced in a future advisory.
Ships that secure the NetZero Slot will receive several advantages, including:
The canal’s Deputy Administrator and Sustainability Officer stated that this initiative will support global maritime efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
She highlighted that by encouraging investment in low-carbon vessels, the canal is rewarding shipping companies that actively contribute to decarbonisation efforts.
