Pilbara Ports has introduced a new program designed to improve the welfare of seafarers by providing free ship-wide WiFi access at the Port of Port Hedland.
The Ship WiFi Support Program, aims to replace the existing practice of individual SIM card recharges with a more advanced and inclusive internet solution.
Instead of each crew member receiving a separate data recharge, the new system will allow full ship access to the internet through a mobile WiFi setup.
This change means that all crew members onboard participating vessels will be able to connect to the internet, helping them stay in touch with their families and friends while in port or at anchorage.
The move is expected to support the mental health and overall wellbeing of seafarers, many of whom spend long periods away from home.
According to Pilbara Ports, this initiative is a step toward recognising the contribution of seafarers and ensuring their needs are met while they help keep global trade moving.
A senior official from the port authority said that it was essential to provide a safe and modern way for crews to stay connected during their time at sea and in port.
Ships that wish to join the program can collect a Ship WiFi Pack, which contains a Mobile WiFi Router enabled with a Telstra SIM and a Mesh WiFi Extender.
Once the equipment is installed onboard, the Port Hedland Seafarers Centre will manage the remote data top-ups for the duration of the vessel’s stay at port or anchorage.
This upgraded system not only offers a wider reach of internet coverage for crews but also simplifies the process by removing the need for individual SIM cards.
The program reflects Pilbara Ports’ ongoing commitment to enhancing seafarer welfare and promoting a more connected, inclusive, and supportive maritime environment.
The port authority is encouraging all vessels calling at Port Hedland to participate in the program and help ensure that seafarers have better access to communication tools that support their wellbeing.
