Stornoway Port Welcomes Its Largest Ever Cruise Ship, The Queen Anne

Stornoway Port experienced a historic moment when Queen Anne arrived, making it the largest cruise ship to dock at the harbour.

The 332 m long Cunard Flagship, weighing 113,000 tonnes, represents a milestone for the port and shows its expanding capacity, and establishes it as a centre in the U.K.’s cruise tourism industry.

Queen Anne arrived on Thursday Morning and left on Friday, and though it was a short stay, it highlights that the port can now accommodate the world’s largest ships.

This was made possible due to the Port’s recent £59 million investment towards enhancing its maritime infrastructure, most importantly, the completion of its Deep Water Terminal, which was designed to handle large cruise ships.

Kirsty Hutchison, cruise manager at Stornoway Port, said that the arrival of Queen Anne is a landmark moment for the port and the community.

Hutchison added that at a time when many industries are facing difficulties, the cruise industry is stepping in to fill those gaps and drive the economy forward.

This is not just about expanding port infrastructure, but diversifying the port operations and positioning the facility as a centre for cruise tourism and other maritime activities.

This significant infrastructure upgrade is not just about accommodating big ships; it’s part of Stornoway’s broader strategy to diversify its port operations and position itself as a hub for both cruise tourism and other maritime activities.

Stornoway is now a premier cruise destination in the U.K, and more than 60,000 passengers are expected to pass through the port during the present cruise season.

Its scenic beauty, rich cultural heritage and historical landmarks make it an attractive stop for cruise ships, which are turning to small but distinctive destinations like Stornoway for a personalised and memorable cruise experience for their guests.

The port will contribute about £7.5 million to the local economy in 2025, thanks to the bustling cruise tourism industry. However, the influx of more tourists is felt by other sectors as well, including transport, retail and hospitality, with local hotels, tour operators and restaurants set to benefit from the increased demand for their services, highlighting the intrinsic role of cruise tourism in propelling economic growth on the island.

This is happy news for residents who have traditionally depended on fishing and agriculture, but now cruise tourism is giving them new opportunities, creating more jobs, helping small local businesses and encouraging investment.
