Marine battery manufacturer AYK Energy has secured a landmark contract to supply batteries for the world’s first fully electric intercontinental fast ferries, connecting Europe and Africa.
Spanish ferry operator Baleària will operate two cutting-edge catamaran ferries powered entirely by electric propulsion for the 18-mile journey between Tarifa, Spain and Tangier, Morocco at speeds of up to 26 knots.
The ferries, being built at the Armon Shipyard in Gijón, will each have a capacity of 225 vehicles and 804 passengers. They will be equipped with 13.8MWh of battery power, distributed across four electric propulsion units. This setup will ensure completely emission-free journeys.
AYK Energy’s founder, Chris Kruger, expressed that the company felt “honored” to be chosen for the project, highlighting the role of AYK’s Spanish agent Vulkan Española S.A. and its team, led by José Ignacio Cuenca, in securing the deal. According to Kruger, AYK’s battery solutions are not only safe and cost-effective but also help support Spain’s government priority of decarbonising transport.
The batteries use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology, which AYK Energy claims offers superior safety, reliability, and longevity compared to traditional Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) batteries. This positions AYK among a small group of manufacturers able to deliver high-performance marine battery solutions for demanding operations.
Pablo García Anduiza, Baleària’s New Projects Director, described the project as “pioneering, innovative, and technologically advanced,” and said it would make Baleària a leader in sustainable transport. He added that the electric ferries would not only eliminate carbon emissions but also reduce noise and vibrations, enhancing passenger comfort.
An advanced charging system will enable the ferries to recharge their batteries in just 40 minutes. This system will employ autonomous robotic arms at both Tangier and Tarifa, connecting directly to onshore power supplies.
