Singapore’s first fully electric tug will begin its deployment in April 2026.
Constructed by PaxOcean Group and powered by ABB, it is the first to be built in Singapore as part of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s harbour craft electrification strategy.
This mandates all newbuild harbour craft to be completely electric or compatible with B100 biofuels or net 0 fuels by 2030.
Tan Thai Yong, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of PaxOcean Group, said that the tug is a major achievement in advancing maritime decarbonisation.
The tug has an integrated electric propulsion system built by ABB and a 3MWh battery system to provide high power when required and instant high torque during towing operations.
ABB’s power and energy management system will allow the e-tug to function optimally across varying power demands.
Olli Tuunainen, Local Business Line Manager, Singapore, ABB’s Marine & Ports division, expressed their pride at being a part of this project to support the world’s maritime capital in its journey towards fully electric harbour operations.
He added that this project will offer a blueprint for further electrification in Singapore and throughout Asia.
