Russian forces carried out a drone attack on the Pivdennyi seaport in Ukraine’s Odesa region during the night of 28 January, causing fires and damaging industrial and railway infrastructure, Ukrainian authorities reported.
Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction and Minister of Community and Territorial Development, Oleksii Kuleba, said the attack hit the port territory, destroying logistics facilities and damaging hangars, a locomotive and production buildings.
According to him, a fire broke out following the strike, and emergency services along with port workers were deployed to deal with the damage.
The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority later confirmed that the strike damaged industrial facilities and railway infrastructure at the port.
The authority reported that the fire was being extinguished by port personnel and that no casualties were recorded. It added that the port continues to operate normally.
Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched 146 strike drones and an Iskander-M ballistic missile from multiple directions. Air defence forces intercepted 103 drones.
In Odesa city, drone strikes damaged a private residential building and the territory of an Orthodox monastery in the Kyivskyi district.
Three people were injured elsewhere in the Odesa region, with one person requiring hospital treatment.
Russian attacks also hit other parts of Ukraine. In Kyiv, a high-rise building and several cars were damaged in the Holosiivskyi district.
In Zaporizhzhia, two people were injured, while fires caused damage to more than 100 apartments and 20 vehicles.
Ukrainian authorities declared 28 January a day of mourning following a Russian strike the previous day that killed three people in Odesa.
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s seaports in an effort to disrupt the country’s export economy, particularly agricultural shipments.
In 2025, Ukrainian media reported 96 attacks on seaports, affecting more than 300 facilities.
Pivdennyi port has been hit several times, including in December when operations were temporarily suspended after a strike caused a large vegetable oil spill.
