V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Tuticorin has become India’s first port to take steps to install an anti-drone security system.
The port authority has signed an agreement with Central Electronics Limited (CEL) to implement the system, which is designed to detect, track and neutralise unauthorised drones operating near sensitive port areas.
According to information released by the port authority, the system will use an integrated Radio Frequency (RF) and radar-based drone detection and jamming setup, developed specifically for port environments.
It will provide 360-degree coverage with omnidirectional bearing and will have an effective range of up to 5 km.
The system will include a drone detector, drone detection radar and a man-pack jammer, forming a complete anti-drone security solution.
The anti-drone system is designed for quick deployment and will allow real-time detection, tracking, classification and neutralisation of unauthorised drones.
Port officials indicated that the system will help protect strategic assets, personnel and daily port operations, while also strengthening indigenous electronic countermeasure capabilities.
The agreement was signed by A. Ganesan, Chief Mechanical Engineer, on behalf of V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, and Anurag Agarwal, Additional General Manager and Head of Department, on behalf of Central Electronics Limited.
The signing took place in the presence of Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of VOC Port Authority, and Rajesh Soundararajan, IAS, Deputy Chairperson, along with senior port officials.
The port authority stated that the project is expected to be completed within three months.
Officials added that the initiative aims to improve airspace surveillance, meet evolving coastal security requirements, and strengthen emergency response preparedness at the port.
Once implemented, the anti-drone system is expected to improve the port’s operational resilience and position VOC Port as a reference point for security measures at Indian ports, according to port officials.
