A.P. Moller-Maersk has placed an order for eight large container vessels at New Times Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in China.
The ships are scheduled for delivery in 2029 and 2030 and form part of the company’s ongoing fleet renewal plans.
All eight vessels will have the same design and will make up a new series of container ships with a capacity of 18,600 TEU.
Maersk said the order is intended to help keep its fleet competitive in the long term. The company said the vessels were ordered to allow more flexible deployment.
Maersk’s head of chartering and newbuilding, Anda Cristescu, stated that while the ships are large, they offer more operational flexibility than the largest container vessels currently being built, allowing them to be deployed across both existing and future service networks.
The vessels will be equipped with dual-fuel engines and will be able to operate on conventional bunker fuel as well as liquefied gas.
Each ship will measure 366 metres in length and 58.6 metres in breadth. These dimensions make them smaller than the largest container ships currently in operation, which can reach lengths of up to 400 metres.
With this latest order, Maersk now has a total of 33 vessels on order. Four of these are scheduled for delivery in the remainder of 2026.
