Key points:
DPT coordinating and carrying out firefighting efforts. I am with my officers in Signal Station.
1. Vessel Genessa, carrying 30092 MT, high-speed diesel on fire near Kandla Port.
2. Total 26 crew member. All alighted. Two injured. One critically injured. Both taken to the hospital.
3. Vessel on fire is 8 nautical miles from Outer Tuna Buoys (OTB). Which is clear from the navigation channel.
4. Port signal station has been converted to control room and is monitoring and coordinating action.
5. 7 Tugs from DTP, 1 from Mundra and 2 from Reliance are engaged in firefighting – using foams- primarily boundary cooling and cooling of cargo tanks.
6. Fire started in the engine room and spread to bunkering tank. Master and other crew in shock stage and unable to share particulars.
7. So far, the fire has not spread to cargo tanks. However, the situation still precarious. Firefighting and boundary cooling of cargo tanks in progress.
8 No list in the ship.
9. All concerned person viz. navy, coast guard, marine Police, DG Shipping (Communication Centre), ISRO, Owner’s representative (Agent – Atlantic Shipping), Cargo receiver (BPCL) informed.
10. Oil Spill Response team already in OTB – 2 crafts with 200 m boom and coast guard anti-pollution crafts underway.
May be, just may be, cargo may be spared averting major disaster. All fingers crossed.
In yet another incident, a tanker ship near Kandla port, India caught fire on Wednesday at around 6:35 PM local time.
According to a local news agency, the fire started in the engine room of the tanker ship Genessa (unconfirmed). Three tugs were immediately sent by the port authority for the rescue operation.
Coast guard and Adani port authority were also informed. Efforts to extinguish the fire are underway.
As per an engineer officer on a nearby vessel who was in contact with the affected ship via VHF, the fire broke out in the engine room of the tanker vessel. Emergency CO2 fixed firefighting system was used to extinguish the fire but it wasn’t successful.
All crew members have abandoned the ship and two crew member received burn injuries (severity of the injury is unknown as of now).
