Istanbul’s Bosphorus is known as a potentially risky region for maritime trade and proved true yet again. A drifting cargo ship nearly caused a disaster as it headed towards a waterfront mansion.
The crash was averted as the vessel stopped just 1 meter away from the mansion.
On Thursday Morning at around 10:45 am Russia bound Panama flagged River Elbe vessel suffered a glitch in its engine. The situation arose off the Yenikoy coast, on the European side of Istanbul which fell on the transit route of the ship coming from the UK. The vessel started drifting and headed to the coast.
The incident was captured by curious onlookers who videotaped the whole thing right from the drifting to the dramatic halt.
The crash was averted after the ship’s captain sought assistance. The Director-General of Coastal Safety sent an emergency boat to help the ship realign to its course. Usually, stranded vessels in the Bosphorus are guided by the Director-General of Coastal Safety.
The ship was towed away to a safe area somewhere along the Ahirkapi coast.
However, authorities from Istanbul thought the ship didn’t take the necessary action on time.
According to the Istanbul Governorate, ” the vessel should have anchored during the emergency when its engine suffered a problem”.
The governorate further notified that the prompt action by the Coastal Safety averted any casualties and damages that might have happened.
