A sailor from Vietnam was arrested for killing the captain of a container vessel bound for a central South Korean port. The arrest happened on Thursday. The murder took place around 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday when the 13,000-ton vessel was going through the sea south of Uldo toward Pyeongtaek-Dangjin Port.
The 24-year-old Vietnamese was accused of stabbing the 44-year-old Chinese ship captain multiple times in the Panama flagged ship’s steering room. Witnesses informed the police that the Vietnamese sailor possibly had murdered the captain after being reprimanded by the latter. He was intoxicated when the incident took place.
The total number of sailors on the ship was 19. There were 17 Vietnamese sailors, including the suspect, and two men from China. The police said that other sailors raised an alarm, reporting the captain’s death to the Coast Guard via the traffic control centre.
The sailor from Vietnam was detained on spot as a murder suspect, police informed. The vessel had been safely escorted to the Pyeongtaek–Dangjin Port, 90 km toward the south of Seoul, around 9:00 a.m. on Thursday.
The Pyeongtaek Coast Guard has said that the intention behind the crime was being examined. He added that the vessel has been put in isolation for further investigation.
