Mega Container Ship Ran Aground Off Germany; Floated Out Successfully During High Tide

Mumbai Maersk, a Danish-flagged huge container ship ran aground in the North Sea, off German island on Wednesday night. A fresh attempt for refloating the vessel, which ran aground at the mouth of River Weser, was expected.

Mumbai Maersk belongs to a relatively smaller group of huge vessels that can carry more than 18,000 containers. The ship was sailing toward Bremerhaven when, per information from VesselsValue AIS tracking data, the vessel doubled back toward the popular tourist island of Wangerooge.

The ship was grounded north of the same island, approximately 25km toward the north of Wilhelmshaven. The container ship entered a location where dredging material was present. However, it was not blocking the German port of Bremerhaven in any way.

The authority also mentioned that no one suffered injuries, but an attempt to move the vessel into deep water had been unsuccessful. There was also no pollution or hull breach.

Maersk said that more tug boats were deployed, and another trial to free the marooned vessel was also made during a high tide later on 3 February, Thursday. And as planned the giant ship was set free thanks to the high tide.

An investigation was carried out to find out how the vessel got stuck.
