Norwegian Cruise Ship Hits An Iceberg In Alaska; Remaining Trip Cancelled

A Norwegian Cruise Line ship was on its way toward an Alaskan glacier. However, it unexpectedly hit an iceberg during the weekend and is being turned around owing to damages, as per reports.

The ship dubbed the Norwegian Sun reportedly smacked into a minor iceberg, also referred to as a growler, on Saturday. It was rerouted to Juneau for further examination.

On June 25, while sailing toward Hubbard Glacier in Alaska, the Norwegian Sun was engulfed by a dense fog, limiting visibility. This resulted in the vessel coming in contact with a growler.

The ship is still fully operational and on its way to Juneau in Alaska for deep assessments, a spokesperson informed on Sunday.

The Juneau Empire reported on Monday that the ship sustained some damages after divers examined it, so it was compelled to return to Seattle to undergo necessary repairs, per Nate Littlejohn, a Coast Guard spokesperson.

Littlejohn added that the vessel called the Coast Guard and reported the incident and further informed the officials that there were no injuries, per Juneau Empire.

He reportedly said the ship is likely to make it back to Seattle safely.

A passenger, with six relatives on a family vacation that was postponed three years due to the ongoing pandemic, Alicia Amador, informed Juneau Empire that she heard great “noise” and then the ship started moving as if it struck something. She estimated the iceberg would be the same size as that of a semi-truck.

She informed that Norwegian told her on Monday that the remaining trip was cancelled and the ship would have to visit Seattle on Thursday. She said her family was told they would be reimbursed.
