Russian Ship Carrying Shipments For Bangladesh’s Nuclear Plant Docks At India’s Haldia Port

India has reportedly come to the rescue of Bangladesh by permitting shipments for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) from Russia to dock at Haldia port. This has come through amid the apprehensions of the Sheikh Hasina government concerning receiving a sanctioned Russian vessel following American limitations.

The consignment that needed to be returned from Bangladesh could be sent back to its destination via road from India. India has been aiding Bangladesh in building the NPP following the India-Russia collaboration for projects.

The Russian vessel, instead of returning, hovered in the Bay of Bengal in late December 2022.

All major Indian ports are reportedly open to Russian-flagged vessels, and India has been accepting consignments over the past year from Russia, with bilateral trade surging 300%.

The Russian-flagged vessel reportedly arrived at Mongla port of Bangladesh toward the December end, in 2022 with the commodities destined for the Rooppur NPP, Kalachand Singh, Mongla Port Authority Secretary informed the media in Dhaka.

Recently, shipments meant for Rooppur NPP had been delivered by Russian and foreign-flagged, neutral vessels at the Mongla port. Following the unloading of cargoes at the port, they’d be carried to Rooppur.
