P&O Ferries has reportedly splashed out over €260 million on hybrid vessels that cannot be charged at their UK or French ports.
The two new super ferries are supposed to be “the most sustainable vessels to ever sail on the English Channel,” per bosses.
However, Dover and Calais electricity grids do not boast the capacity for partially electric boats, so they will be operated on diesel when delivered later in 2023, per the UK’s Telegraph report.
The ferry operator found itself in hot water, firing about 800 employees on short notice and replacing them with comparatively cheaper overseas agency crew members.
After several months, its Dubai-based parent firm, DP World, declared record profits.
Its decision to go ahead with the purchase of super ferries, first declared in 2020, has proved controversial.
