U.S. Naval Vessel Returns To Waters After Carrying Out Repairs in Shipyard Of India

The US Navy’s Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo vessel, USNS Matthew Perry, has carried out its maintenance and repair activities at an L&T shipyard based in Kattupalli, which is close to Chennai.

The maintenance and repair activities commenced on 11 March and were executed on 27 March. USNS Matthew Perry happens to be the second vessel that belongs to the US Navy to execute maintenance works at the L&T shipyard. The first was USNS Charles Drew, which carried out its voyage repair activity in August 2022.

A press release mentioned that the broader scope of work on the Matthew Perry reflects the US Navy’s desire to work toward accomplishing a wider scope of ship repairs routinely. This move also demonstrates the commitment of the US Navy and the Department of Defense to make the best use of repair facilities in India after Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State, reportedly expressed his intent at the US-India 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in Washington, DC in April 2022.

Judith Ravin, the US Consul General based in Chennai, reported, the US is a proud Indo-Pacific country, and their vital interests are tied inextricably to the region.
