Largest FSRU In The World Successfully Upgraded Ahead Of Its Deployment To Hong Kong

The FSRU vessel that will be dubbed Bauhinia Spirit is the world’s largest, with a length of about 345 meters and a storage capacity of approximately 263,000 m3 of LNG. The ship was upgraded at Singapore’s Keppel Shipyard.

Per HK Electric and CLP Power, the power majors that are jointly building Hong Kong’s first-ever offshore LNG terminal, the FSRU reached on 13 April, and it is currently based at the South Cheung Chau Anchorage.

When port clearance and checks are executed, the FSRU vessel will set sail to the offshore LNG terminal toward the east of the Soko Islands for the ultimate commissioning of the assignment next week, the firms said.

It is expected to be moored at the offshore LNG terminal’s jetty and used to store, receive, and regasify the LNG. The terminal will also supply gas to two places in Hong Kong, the Lamma Power Station at Lamma Island and the Black Point Power Station in New Territories.

The offshore LNG terminal is the first of its type in Hong Kong. It reportedly included the building of a marine jetty as well as two subsea gas pipelines that have been executed. Commissioning of the equipment is underway. The terminal is scheduled for operation in mid-2023, CLP Power informed.

Dutch tank storage firm Vopak, which had been pursuing the acquisition of 49.99% of the FSRU from Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), ultimately decided to drop this acquisition.

The firm, however, said that it would be involved in the terminal’s commissioning and would continue extending support to the operation of the terminal as needed.
