Indian Navy Launches Anjadip, A Powerful Anti-Submarine Warfare Vessel

Anjadip is the third of the eight vessels per the deal signed between the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (abbreviated GRSE) in Kolkata and the Ministry of Defense in 2019.

An anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW-SWC) vessel constructed by Kolkata’s GRSE for the Indian Navy was introduced at the L&T’s Kattupalli Port facility on Tuesday.

Anjadip is the third of the eight vessels in the contract signed between the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers of Kolkata and the Ministry of Defence in 2019 (April).

The vessel was titled after the island of Anjadip, situated off Karwar Port in Karnataka, signifying maritime importance, an official release mentioned here.

The Arnala class of vessels constructed by the GRSE would replace the Abhay class of Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes belonging to the Navy. They are designed to undertake anti-submarine activities in coastal waters, low-intensity maritime missions, and subsurface surveillance.

The vessels can boast 80% indigenization. Each ship measures approximately 77 meters in length and would have a displacement of about 900 tons with a max speed of 25 knots with an endurance of 1,800 nms.

The Commander in Chief associated with the Strategic Forces Command and Vice Admiral R B Pandit were at the launch ceremony.

Per the contract, four vessels are constructed by the GRSE in Kolkata while the rest have been subcontracted to Larsen and Toubro, Shipbuilding in Kattupalli.
