On Friday, a Chinese company NewNew Shipping Line representative announced they would deploy five ice-class vessels to facilitate transportation along the Northern Sea Route. These ships will operate between China and Russia, as confirmed by Jing Ke, the company’s spokesperson, during a press conference.
According to a company official, if the weather conditions permit, the shipping period might be extended until November. This decision is motivated by the potential benefits and intriguing opportunities it could bring for China.
During a press conference focused on the inauguration of the regular shipment service connecting Russia and China, the company representative said they would supply five ice-class vessels this year. These vessels will range in capacity from 1,200 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) to 2,500 TEU, as revealed by the spokesperson to the attending journalists.
Spanning a distance of 5,600 kilometres (3,480 miles), the Northern Sea Route serves as the most direct maritime passage connecting European Russia and the Far East. It is important to note that this route falls within Russia’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.
