Indian Coast Guard Rescues Sick Mariner From Tanker Vessel 112nm Off Kochi, Kerela

Indian Coast Guard’s advanced light helicopter (abbreviated the ALH) conducted a medical evacuation of an individual who reportedly suffered a sudden stroke and also had partial paralysis fighting against a turbulent sea on Monday morning. Pradeep Das, the mariner and crew member of Global Star, suffered a suspected stroke. He used to have high blood pressure. He got partial paralysis on the left side, necessitating an urgent medical evacuation.

The vessel was sailing from Khorfakkan in the UAE to Colombo. While sailing via the Arabian Sea, the ship encountered a technical glitch on 10 July and had to be anchored 52 miles west of Kozhikode. On 23 July, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre based in Mumbai received information via Centro Internazionale Radio Medic (abbreviated CIRM), Italy, that one crew member onboard Global Star possibly had a stroke and needed urgent medical evacuation.

The MRCC in Mumbai asked the Maritime Rescue Sub-center (abbreviated MRSC) in Kochi to look into the distress call. The MRSC started communicating with the vessel and started an operation to evacuate the distressed individual.

The Indian Coast Guard also diverted ICGS Arnvesh, maintaining a vigil in the area to the location. Considering the vulnerability of the scenario and tough sea conditions, an ALH was sent out on Monday to conduct a difficult mid-sea evacuation. The vessel was located approximately 112 nm off the Kochi coast. Amid heavy rain, challenging weather, and poor visibility, the pilots made it to the vessel and evacuated the mariner successfully.
