The US Navy has awarded a significant contract worth $528.4 million to HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division for maintaining and modernizing aircraft carriers in San Diego.
The agreement will span over five years and cover Nimitz- and Gerald R Ford-class carriers based in the area.
Known as an IDIQ (Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity) cost-plus incentive and award contract, it will support emergent work, continuous maintenance availabilities, and Chief of Naval Operations scheduled availabilities.
The Ford class comprises four planned carriers, with Gerald R. Ford commissioned in 2017 and the subsequent carrier expected in 2024, followed by others at four-year intervals.
Meanwhile, the USS John F. Kennedy construction began in 2011 and was launched in 2019 ahead of schedule for testing.
It was initially set for delivery in September 2024, just before USS Nimitz’s planned retirement. The Nimitz class, with ten commissioned ships, was designed for a 50-year service life, requiring mid-life refits and overhauls, including nuclear reactor refuelling and comprehensive modernization lasting 3-4 years, surpassing typical maintenance.
