Indian Coast Guard Rescue 36 Crew From Research Ship In Arabian Sea After Engine Failure

The Indian Coast Guard rescued 36 people, including eight scientists, on a research vessel dubbed RV Sindhu Sadhana of the National Institute of Oceanography (abbreviated NIO), in the Arabian Sea off the Karwar Coast on 27 July, in Karnataka, the Ministry of Defence informed. The research vessel suffered engine failure and was about 20 nm from the land when the distress signal came through.

The situation was crucial as the next-gen research vessel of the NIO was loaded with scientific equipment and research data. Further, the vessel’s proximity to the environmentally sensitive Karwar coastline signaled a risk of grounding that may have resulted in huge oil leakage and pollution to the marine environment.

On getting the distress call, the Indian Coast Guard swung into its action and immediately activated a priority rescue mission, dispatching a highly advanced vessel with a highly skilled team to the site. Identifying the probable magnitude of the disaster, the Indian Coast Guard was activated to safeguard the vessel to safeguard the weak ecosystem and prevent the ship from going aground.

Despite the challenging weather, the vessel’s distance from the coastline, and the size of the vessel, the Indian Coast Guard (abbreviated ICG) team took the ship under tow to get it to Goa, carrying out a smooth rescue mission. The crew members on the NIO vessel are all safe.
