In an impressive feat, Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) delivered the advanced Cable Laying and Repair Vessel (CLRV) “C/S Sophie Germain” to the European market. This marks CDPLC’s second successful delivery of a Cable Layer vessel within five years, solidifying its position in the global shipyard industry.

The “C/S Sophie Germain” is a state-of-the-art vessel for sub-sea cable laying and repair operations. Crafted by Vard Design AS of Norway, the ship measures 100 meters long, 18.8 meters in beam, and 7.15 meters deep, with a deadweight capacity of 1800 DWT. Its impressive speed of 14.5 knots and accommodation for up to 76 individuals ensure efficient and reliable operations.

Despite facing financial challenges in Sri Lanka and cancelled projects, CDPLC Chairman Hideaki Tanaka expressed satisfaction in successfully delivering “C/S Sophie Germain,” a powerful message to the international market. The vessel’s collaboration with Vard Design AS highlights the brand “Built in Sri Lanka blending Sri Lankan technology with Japanese quality.”

The collaboration with Orange Marine, a renowned French company specializing in submarine telecommunications, adds significance to the project. Orange Marine excels in designing, engineering, installing intercontinental and regional links, and maintaining existing cables, representing 15% of the global fleet in this sector.

The delivery ceremony was attended by the French Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Jean-François Pactet, and the Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Mizukoshi Hideaki, signifying the cooperation between the nations involved.
