The Pentagon has started sending its vessels and aircraft closer to Israel, Lloyd Austin, Defense Secretary, declared on Sunday in a show of support, a day following the attacks launched by Hamas across Israel.
Austin reportedly directed the Ticonderoga-class cruiser dubbed USS Normandy, the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford, and four other destroyers to shift to the Eastern Mediterranean, per a press release published on Sunday.
Besides the Navy’s assets, Austin has taken measures to enhance U.S. Air Force A-10, F-35, F-15, and F-16 fighter aircraft squadrons in that region, he mentioned during a press release.
The moves came in response to the Hamas attacks on Israel and followed discussions with Joe Biden, according to Austin, and intended to strengthen the posture of the Department of Defense in the region to boost regional deterrence support and efforts.
Austin mentioned that The DOD will rapidly supply Israel’s Defense Forces with more equipment and required resources, including munitions.
POLITICO first reported that Biden’s administration was striving to transfer necessary weapons to Israel.
The first of the arms will start moving on Sunday and reach in the coming days, per Austin.
During a Sunday morning call, Biden informed Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Prime Minister, that additional aid for Israel’s Defense Forces is headed to Israel, with additional support expected to follow in the next few days, per a White House readout of the call.
The President expressed his sympathy for the wounded, missing, and killed and also pledged his support for the Government and individuals of Israel in the face of an unforeseen and appalling assault brought about by Hamas, per the readout published by the White House.
