HaiSea Wamis, the world’s first all-electric harbor tugboat, has successfully completed its first voyage with the use of an all-electric vessel to carry an oil tanker.
With this momentous operation, an entirely new age of environmentally responsible ship escorts began.
On October 18, 2023, the gigantic 30,000+ tonne oil tanker Argent Iris was escorted past the rough waters of the Second Narrows Bridge and into the Vancouver Harbour by the HaiSea Wamis, a recent addition to HaiSea Marine’s fleet.
The first of three totally electric tugboats planned for the fleet is the HaiSea Wamis, designed by the prestigious naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd., located in Vancouver.
In May 2023, HaiSea Marine—a joint venture with Seaspan ULC that the Haisla Nation owns a majority stake—accepted delivery of the tugboat.
The new export facility of LNG Canada, located in Kitimat, British Columbia, is where these electric tugs are meant to be used.
The HaiSea Wee’git will soon join the fleet, and HaiSea Brave, the third ship, is expected to arrive soon after.
These three tugs are part of a major five-tug contract that HaiSea Marine inked.
The other two tugs in the deal are the LNG-powered HaiSea Kermode and HaiSea Warrior, which are the first LNG tugboats in Canada.
Seaspan reports that Robert Allan, a naval architect business located in Vancouver, created the HaiSea Wamis, the first of three tugboats to reach our shores entirely powered by electricity.
When combined with the upcoming dual-fuel escort tugs from HaiSea (diesel and LNG), the fleet will rank among the greenest globally.”
The HaiSea Wamis and HaiSea Wee’git will conduct towing operations in Vancouver Harbour in the next few days prior to departing on their journey to Kitimat.
This journey is important because it will offer ship-assist and escort towing services to LNG tankers visiting LNG Canada’s new export facility located in the Haisla Nation’s homeland.
The operation’s success not only marks a significant turning point for the marine sector but also reaffirms the industry’s dedication to sustainable and eco-friendly shipping practices.
With its electric substitutes, the HaiSea Wamis are set to pave the way for marine transportation’s transition to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable future.
