South Korea reportedly boasts next-gen shipbuilding capabilities for the LNG carriers and bunkering vessels.
However, owing to safety concerns, vessel-to-vessel LNG bunkering has not been carried out at the loading docks of trading ports.
To address the concerns, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea (abbreviated as the MOF) initiated a plan in 2023 to promote LNG’s bunkering operations.
They have been supporting R&D assignments and LNG bunkering operators by offering port facility fee discounts to ensure the successful implementation of LNG bunkering operations.
KR, with the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (abbreviated the KRISO), has actively conducted research and development focused on improving LNG bunkering safety tech, including developing LNG bunkering operating processes.
As explained, KR plays a crucial role as one of the members of an advisory group established by the MOF, besides other such specialised organisations.
The group aids the ministry in reviewing as well as approving the administrative processes that are related to the safety regulations, with the goal of lowering unnecessary obstacles as well as enhancing efficiency.
