Chinese developer Goldwind and the Danish shipping behemoth Maersk have signed the largest-ever green methanol offtake deal.
The agreement, a significant turning point for the world’s shipping sector, will power 12 of Maersk’s large, methanol-enabled ships that are currently being ordered.
According to the agreement, Maersk will receive half a million tons of green methanol per year from Goldwind, which will be produced by combining green bio-methanol and e-methanol.
This renewable fuel will be produced using wind power at a new Hinggan League facility in Northeast China. The first batches are supposed to be delivered in 2026 when production is scheduled to start.
Maersk’s strategic decision to work with Goldwind is aimed at helping the company realise its audacious target of having net-zero greenhouse gas emissions throughout its operations by 2040.
Rabab Boulos, A.P. Moller-Maersk’s Chief Infrastructure Officer, highlighted the importance of the agreement, saying, This agreement is historic for Maersk because it will enable them to keep emissions footmark in line with 1.5 °C track outlined in the Paris Agreement and drastically reduce it this decade. By doing this, customers will be guaranteed low-carbon assistance with shipping for the remaining years of this decade.”
The 2,100 TEU feeder vessel Laura Maersk set a precedent in green shipping earlier this year when it delivered its first ship powered by methanol.
The company has ordered 24 more green ships that run on methanol; delivery is anticipated in 2024–2027. The agreement between Maersk and Goldwind is critical because it de-risks the early stages of Maersk’s net-zero move and promotes the development of an aggressive green methanol market by 2030.
The chairman of Goldwind, Wu Gang, stated his help for the collaborative promotion of green transition and Maersk’s innovative efforts in the maritime green fuel sector.
Maersk is working with international partners to source solutions for the vessel series delivered in 2024–25. Maersk plans to receive its first large ocean-going vessel (16,000 TEU) equipped with methanol in the first quarter of 2024.
