The Huthis have announced themselves to be part of an “axis of resistance” of Iran’s supporters and proxies in response to Israel’s battle with Hamas.
The battle has heightened the prospect of a wider Middle East confrontation, with near-daily exchanges of fire between Lebanon and Israel.
Since the commencement of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, the Huthis in Yemen have fired a succession of drones and missiles at Israel.
On Wednesday, Israel announced that it had thwarted a “cruise missile” going for the country’s south, a shot claimed by Houthi rebels.
The forces fired missiles toward different military targets in southern Israel, wrote Yahia Saree, spokesperson for the Huthis’ armed branch, on X.
They will continue carrying out military operations till the Israeli violence against the people of Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza ceases, he said.
The Huthis have also vowed to attack Israeli shipping and on Sunday claimed to have captured the Galaxy Leader, an Israel-linked cargo ship with 25 international crew, at the Red Sea’s entrance.
The seizure was described as an incredibly grave incident of global consequence by Israel’s military and a flagrant violation of international law by a US military official.
On Wednesday, Hamas and Israel announced a four-day cease-fire that will include a hostage and prisoner transfer.
According to Israeli authorities, some 240 hostages were captured by Hamas and other Palestinian militants during violent assaults into Israel on the 7th of October, which allegedly killed 1,200 people, the majority of whom were civilians.
The bombing sparked a large Israeli offensive into Hamas-ruled Gaza, which authorities estimate has killed over 14,000 Palestinians, two-thirds of whom are women and children.
