A microplastic (MP) collection device called HQ, developed in a revolutionary partnership between Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Miura Co., Ltd., has been certified as an Innovation Endorsement by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK).
This endorsement acknowledges HQ as an advanced maritime industry solution under the “Products and Solutions” category.
During trials in June 2022, the HQ device was installed and tested on the MOL car carrier EMERALD ACE, showcasing its capabilities.
Following a comprehensive audit, Class NK gave HQ high marks for its seamless handling, continuous seawater processing, and non-structural design, which ensures little disruption to current systems.
The device’s certification highlights its inventive features and represents a significant advancement in pursuing sustainable marine practices.
The HQ device’s creator, Miura, has decided to bring it to market after the successful trials and will begin marketing campaigns in July.
Its salient features are the device’s stability, ability to gather microplastics while in motion, and general effectiveness in processing saltwater.
Beyond its immediate uses, the HQ device corresponds with the increasing need for data from research institutions on the amount of microplastics in the ocean.
In addition to gathering microplastics, MOL pledges to give helpful information on the kind, quantity, location, and timing of microplastics recovered. Understanding the flow of microplastics and evaluating the results of reduction efforts depend heavily on this data.
Miura and MOL collaboration showcase their dedication to protecting the marine environment. One of MOL’s sustainability initiatives is to lower the amount of microplastics in the world’s oceans.
On the other hand, Miura works to create an environmentally friendly society by developing creative solutions that support global marine environmental conservation.
