China Merchants Gets DNV Approval For The World’s Largest Pure Car and Truck Carrier Design

DNV awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co., Ltd. for their ground-breaking design of the largest Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) in the world.

With 14 decks for simultaneous vehicle storage, the innovative ship has a capacity of 11,000 car equivalent units (CEUs), measuring 234 meters in length and 40 meters in width. This design reduces the cost of transportation per vehicle while also improving efficiency.

The “Super Large Smart Green 11,000” design complies with the strict guidelines of NOx Tier III and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3 by incorporating several decarbonisation measures to reduce carbon emissions drastically.

The PCTC is outfitted with a 4,200 cbm LNG storage tank and runs mainly on LNG.

The vessel’s hull line has been optimised through extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations and ship model tests in partnership with ship designer Deltamarin.

Energy-saving features like an air lubrication system and a stern flow optimisation device have been integrated to reduce resistance and the amount of propulsion power required. Solar energy and hybrid propulsion systems strengthen the resolve to reduce energy use.

Norbert Kray, DNV’s Regional Manager for Maritime and Greater China, expressed optimism about the expanding market for electric cars and the ensuing need for PCTCs.

Acknowledging the critical role that low carbon fuel, energy efficiency, and scale play in reducing emissions, DNV is proud to evaluate this upcoming generation of car carriers in collaboration with China Merchants.

According to China Merchants, negotiations with prospective buyers for the 11,000 CEU PCTC are ongoing, and the company is optimistic about the vessel’s market acceptance.
