Singapore’s MPA Seeks Proposals For Methanol Bunker Fuel Supply By 2025

The Maritime and Port Authority (abbreviated the MPA) of Singapore mentioned on Thursday that it was seeking out proposals from firms for supplying methanol as a marine bunker fuel from 2025 in Singapore.

The call had emerged ahead of an uptick in methanol-powered vessels, as firms ramped up the orders of such vessels amid their plans to lower carbon emissions with advanced and cleaner fuels.

The proposals need to look into the sources of methanol supply, the bunkering operation model at a commercial scale, and the ways for transferring methanol physically.

The specific move is aimed at scaling up the methanol bunker supply in Singapore, stated the MPA’s Chief Executive Teo Eng Dih, elaborating that the relevant port authority would develop a methanol bunkering licensing guideline.

Proposals are to be submitted by 29 February 2024, at 15:00 Singapore time. Singapore, the world’s greatest bunkering hub, carried out the first bio-methanol refuelling operation for any Maersk vessel in July 2023.

Interest in methanol bunkering has gone up as the shipping industry strives to achieve carbon emission goals, with major shipowners as well as ports stepping up the methanol bunkering-specific assignments globally.
