MAN Energy Solutions To Supply Most Powerful Medium-Speed Engine For A Dredger

The Dutch dredging and marine services business Royal Boskalis B.V. has awarded MAN Energy Solutions a contract to supply three MAN 49/60 engines for a 31,000 m³ Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD). The engines will be fitted with MAN Low-Pressure Selective Catalytic Reduction (LP-SCR) systems to guarantee adherence to IMO Tier III regulations.

The TSHD, built at Royal IHC’s Krimpen aan den IJssel yard, should be operational by mid-2026. Vice President Marine at MAN Energy Solutions, Lex Nijsen, expressed gratitude for being selected for this unique dredger project with particular specifications. Senior Vice President Marita Krems highlighted that this order, which comes from a reliable client for a difficult application, is a big step in the right direction for MAN’s marine engine.

According to Christian Kamm, Sales Manager for Marine Europe, the solution’s dependability, effectiveness, and environmental friendliness help Boskalis dredging fleet achieve its sustainability objectives. Major drives will be electrically driven, improving mobility and fuel efficiency, and the TSHD will be diesel-electric powered with Azipods, enabling operating at shallow draughts.

The BV-classified MAN 49/60 engines provide complete fuel flexibility, operating on conventional fuels and environmentally friendly substitutes like biodiesel. They also meet NOx Tier III emission regulations and are “methanol-ready.” When the SCR system operates, the engines maintain high efficiency without additional fuel. The design collaboration with Royal IHC ensures seamless integration into the dredger’s engine room.

The MAN 49/60 engine has a high power-per-cylinder, which lowers the number of cylinders needed; its type approval test was finished in March 2023. The SaCoS 5000 engine automation system, which is the next version, offers improved cyber security and remote support features.

An essential consideration in the engine’s selection was its capacity to satisfy the load-acceptance requirements of the diesel-electric propulsion system used by the TSHD. MAN Energy Solutions expects the 49/60 engines to be used in the future with sustainable fuels like e-methanol and biofuels, viewing this initiative as a significant contribution to decarbonisation efforts.
