BYD’s Pioneering Chartered Vehicle Vessel Loaded With 5000 EVs Sets Sail

BYD’s first-ever chartered vehicle has now set sail from Shenzhen in China, loaded with over 5,000 EVs, to Europe, per state media Xinhua on Tuesday. China’s automakers, including BYD, SAIC Motor, and Chery Automobile, have opened new tabs and placed orders for vessels to counter the increasing shipping costs as they enhance exports.

Xinhua reported that the brand new roll-on, roll-off vehicle carrier “BYD Explorer No.1” was set on Monday for the Netherlands’ Flushing Port and the port of Bremerhaven in Germany. The vessel was developed by Yantai CIMC Raffles Shipyard exclusively for Zodiac Maritime, Xinhua mentioned.

Zodiac Maritime is headquartered in London. It is an international ship management firm owned by the Israeli Ofer family. China reportedly exported a whopping 5.2 million vehicles last year, which is estimated to have successfully overtaken Japan as the most significant auto exporter in the world.

BYD exported nearly 243,000 cars of its sales of three million vehicles last year, with Australia, Israel, and Brazil among the most significant overseas markets, per data from the China Passenger Car Association.
