IMO Unveils Four-Year Agenda For Safer And Greener Shipping

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez recently revealed the organisation’s four-year strategy, which focuses on safer, more secure, and ecologically responsible shipping. Dominguez announced the following strategic targets during a news conference held at the IMO Headquarters in London:

Arsenio Dominguez highlighted the IMO’s efforts to govern the global shipping industry, underlining the organisation’s critical role in regulating a sector that accounts for more than 80% of international trade.

The Secretary-General emphasised the International Maritime Organization’s support for Member States, mainly Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States. The goal is to ensure that all countries benefit from the organisation’s regulatory structure.

Dominguez highlighted the significance of changing public perceptions of the shipping business. He wants to improve the IMO’s image as a diverse, inclusive, and transparent agency that recognises the importance of shipping worldwide.

The Secretary-General wanted to improve relations with stakeholders and the global community. He wants to make the IMO more interactive and responsive, recognising the industry’s duty to diverse groups and communities.

Dominguez also spoke about difficulties and possibilities in the maritime sector:

Red Sea Attacks: He criticised the continuous attacks on foreign shipping in the Red Sea, emphasising the need to protect sailors’ lives and pushing for tensions to be reduced and freedom of navigation restored.

Suez Canal Trade Impact: The Secretary-General acknowledged a 42% decrease in trade volume through the Suez Canal over the last two months and highlighted the IMO’s ongoing conversation with nations, industry partners, and the international community to address difficulties and find solutions.

Emissions of Greenhouse Gases: Dominguez reported on the IMO’s initiatives to decarbonise shipping by 2050. The organisation wants to establish international standards and binding laws to lower greenhouse gas emissions, such as a worldwide marine fuel standard and price system.

Transparency, Diversity, and Inclusion: The Secretary-General highlighted that the IMO is committed to promoting a culture that values these three elements. Important meetings will be streamed online, a gender-balanced senior management team will be appointed, multilingualism will be encouraged, and female representation will be guaranteed at public events and panels.
