Greek Shipping Firm’s Former Employee Kills 3 Before Taking His Own Life

In a tragic shooting incident, four people, including the suspected shooter, were killed at the office of a shipping firm close to Athens, Greece. According to reports, the perpetrator, a 70-year-old Egyptian national and a former employee of the company carried a shotgun and a revolver when he broke into the European Navigation company’s building. The attacker, who was reportedly fired from the company a short while ago, shot and killed three people, two men and a woman, including the owner of the company, before killing himself.

The incident, which took place in Glyfada, south of Athens, prompted an immediate reaction from law enforcement and anti-terrorism forces. Authorities discovered the suspect dead body next to a hunting rifle that was probably used in the attack when they arrived.

Additionally, a handgun was found in the suspect’s vehicle while it was parked outside the office building. The eyewitness, who was identified as an employee of the company, heard gunshots from outside the building while approaching the stairs. He came to know the perpetrator of the shooting, after which he made his way out through the backdoor of the garage.

According to police spokesperson Consantia Dimoglidou, the gunman was hiding up on the building’s second floor as the standoff went on. After several hours of attempts by a police negotiator to calm the situation, the man ultimately turned the pistol on himself.

Authorities roped off the area and conducted in-depth investigations into the incident, including the elite counterterrorism squad EKAM. The shooting incident shocked the people of Greece; despite it having stricter gun regulations, such incidents are rare in the country.

Information on the victims and the circumstances leading to the shooter’s motivation will emerge gradually as the inquiry continues. However, two other women who had been locked in a restroom during the attack were uninjured.

The fatal shooting at the shipping company’s offices has sent shockwaves throughout the community, highlighting consideration of workplace safety and gun violence prevention measures.

The company European Navigation was founded in 1979. The organisation has overseen a fleet of approximately 35 ships, ranging in size from handysize to huge VLOCs and Capesize bulk carriers, as well as chemical tankers to VLCCs.
