The Indian Navy has initiated a massive search operation in search of a sailor who has been reported missing from a military ship since February 27, 2024. It is confirmed that Sahil Verma is the missing sailor. The Mumbai-based Western Naval Command established a high-level board of inquiry to investigate the incident.
Verma’s parents, Subash Chander and Rama Kumari, who reside in the Ghou Manhasan area of Jammu, have requested a CBI probe into their son’s “mysterious disappearance.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha have all been requested to help ensure their son’s safe homecoming.
The Western Naval Command verified Verma’s disappearance in a post on Twitter. They reported that Verma, a Seaman II, went missing at sea while on assignment with an Indian Naval Ship on February 27. The Navy is conducting an extensive search operation that has involved the deployment of ships and aircraft.
The family complained that they weren’t provided with enough information. On February 29, they received a call alerting them of Verma’s disappearance two days prior. They last spoke with him on February 25 and need clarification about what has happened to him.
Verma’s parents have demanded justice and transparency in the probe. Given that there were over 400 people on board the ship when Verma went missing, they are suspicious of the circumstances surrounding their son’s abduction.
Gautam, Verma’s maternal uncle, expressed the family’s sentiments and stressed the importance of a CBI investigation. He wondered how Verma could have disappeared from the ship, especially since it had only been back at base for a day before heading out again. Two days after the tragic incident, he criticised the delay in notifying the family and establishing a board of investigation.
