Port Of Liverpool Set To Install UK’s Largest Roof-Mounted Solar Energy System

Peel Ports Group, the UK’s second-largest port operator, has collaborated with E.ON, a significant energy business, to begin an ambitious sustainable energy project at Liverpool’s Port. This project has significantly advanced the port’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

The first part of the project comprises installing the largest solar energy system on a roof in the UK, combined with plans to update the current wind turbines along the River Mersey.

Peel Ports Group has a 25-year agreement that calls for a significant reduction in its carbon impact. The project aims to install 63,000 solar panels on 26 different port buildings, covering an area the size of 18 football fields.

These panels have the potential to create up to 31MW of renewable electricity, fulfilling about 25% of the port’s yearly energy demand and offsetting more than 6,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, which is equivalent to removing over 2,250 automobiles from the road.

The project uses the existing port infrastructure to minimise disruption to the local community and ships all required technology and equipment. The first 6,000 solar panels have already been delivered; installation should be finished by mid-2026.

E.ON, in charge of funding and execution, promises to hire local contractors and firms for installation and maintenance throughout the project’s life cycle.

The deal calls for installing four more giant wind turbines instead of the five current ones, which should provide nearly 20MW of renewable energy in addition to solar energy. This phase is expected to start in 2027–2028, subject to planning permissions and community consultations, to further enhance the port’s energy independence and guarantee a steady power supply even during decreased solar output.

Peel Ports Group CEO Claudio Veritiero expressed enthusiasm for the partnership and highlighted its importance in turning the Port of Liverpool into a sustainable hub.

The CEO of E.ON UK, Chris Norbury, stressed the importance of decarbonising vital infrastructure, such as ports, in the UK’s effort to achieve environmental sustainability.

Peel Ports has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by submitting planning applications to Liverpool City Council and Sefton Council for this enormous sustainable energy project. With this project, the corporation will have invested over £1 billion in sustainable infrastructure in the last ten years.
