According to the latest Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) Survey, there was a significant increase in overall happiness among seafarers globally in the first quarter of 2024.

The increase in happiness reached a commendable 6.94 out of 10, which indicates excellent progress in all aspects of seafaring life.

Financial Security and Camaraderie

Seafarers expressed happiness with their jobs and cited the opportunity to support their families while travelling as a major source of fulfilment.

The importance of crew camaraderie and a supportive working environment were cited as key factors contributing to the increase in happiness.

Persisting Challenges

Despite frequent developments in the industry, problems persist.

Seafarers struggle to maintain a healthy work-life balance, further complicated by extended contract lengths and few possibilities for shore leave.

Stress and fatigue are still common due to the demanding nature of the job and severe compliance requirements.

Connectivity and Shore Leave

Improved connectivity, such as Wifi, contributes to seafarers’ well-being by facilitating regular communication with family members.

Shore leave satisfaction increased unexpectedly, emphasising its relevance as a retreat for relaxation.

However, issues such as excessive paperwork and limited amenities at some ports persist.

Salary and Meals

Seafarers expressed more satisfaction with timely payments and competitive compensation but still face wage stagnation and inequities compared to shore-based jobs.

Mixed feedback on the quality of meals onboard highlighted economic restrictions, the need for different menu selections, and the need for skilled cooks.

Health and Fitness Initiatives

Positive feedback was received for health and fitness programs, with several corporations prioritising gym facilities and recreational activities onboard.

However, problems such as demanding work schedules and limited recreational opportunities impede seafarers’ capacity to maintain good health.

Training and Crew Dynamics

Seafarers embrace thorough training programs and assistance for professional growth, although concerns about time restrictions and irrelevant information remain.

Crew relationships remain complex, with strong camaraderie and collaboration balanced by challenges, including cultural differences and personality disputes.

Workload and Welfare Facilities

Effective vessel operations require manageable workloads, although concerns about long hours and fatigue continue.

Access to welfare facilities ashore is critical in maintaining seafarer well-being, although difficulties such as limited access and higher costs persist.

The research presents a combined but cautiously optimistic picture of seafaring life in Q1 2024.

While financial stability, camaraderie and unity have improved, persistent challenges such as work-life imbalance and poor living circumstances highlight the need for ongoing efforts to promote seafarer well-being and create a more supportive sector.

As the industry faces these challenges, addressing issues such as fair salaries, quality of life onboard, and access to welfare facilities will be critical to maintaining a positive trajectory and creating a healthier, better work environment for seafarers worldwide.
