MAN Cryo Wins Contract To Design & Engineer 2 Hydrogen Powered RoPax Ferries

Torghatten Nord A/S, a Norwegian ferry major, has contracted MAN Cyro to work on a project encompassing the engineering and the design of two hydrogen-powered RoPax new-build ferries.

This initiative has stemmed from a Norwegian government effort for major vessels that operate on the mainland-Lofoten Islands crossing to emerge as emission-free.

Part of MAN Energy Solutions and a specialist in engineering solutions for cryogenic equipment for the handling, storage, and distribution of gases, MAN Cryo will provide the detailed design for bunkering mechanisms, hydrogen pipes, and vent masts for these vessels.

Besides, MAN Cryo will also act as the system integrator exclusively for the hydrogen process plant, collaborating with other significant suppliers in the initiative.

Torghatten Nord A/S earlier secured the lucrative Bodø —Værøy —Røst —Moskenes ferry tender based in northern Norway.

Two brand-new vessels envisioned and designed by the Norwegian Ship Design Company will be phased into the route.

Their hulls will be manufactured by the Cemre shipyard based in Türkiye and towed to the Myklebust shipyard based in Norway for outfitting; the hydrogen equipment will also be installed in Norway.

Both vessels operate on compressed hydrogen and are scheduled for delivery to Torghatten Nord A/S in 2026.

Eirik Olsen, the Operational Director with Torghatten Nord AS, said they are pleased to have signed the deal with MAN Cryo.

This deal extends the collaboration from LNG to include hydrogen.

Gjermund Johannessen, the CEO of The Norwegian Ship Design Company, mentioned that they’ve worked with MAN Cryo on many initiatives in the past, and they know it as a forward-looking and solution-oriented major.

The firm looks forward to continuing to collaborate with MAN Cryo and contributing its gas expertise to the hydrogen ferry initiatives for Torghatten Nord.

Henrik Malm, the MD of MAN Energy Solutions Sweden, mentioned that the new order reportedly underscores MAN Energy Solutions’ leadership in developing future fuel systems for the broader maritime sector.

With a focus on advanced engineering, personalised design and integration, the specialist team associated with MAN Cryo is now setting new benchmarks in sustainable marine operations.

This way, they are significantly contributing to the ‘Moving Big Things to Zero’ notion, which advances the vision for a cleaner and greener maritime future in which innovation spearheads the way in minimising ecological footprints.

Torghatten Nord is all set to transform ferry transportation with the help of vessels enabled by green hydrogen, which will be a crucial step in achieving the zero-emission mission.
