A cruise ship meant to host over 2000 police officers providing security at the G7 summit has been seized due to its poor conditions.
The Mykonos Magic, recently renamed the Goddess of the Night, was scheduled to dock in Brindisi, approximately 60 kilometres from Borgo Egnazia, the luxurious resort in Puglia hosting the summit from June 13 to 15, 2024.
The confiscation came after police unions complained about the ship’s terrible sanitary conditions.
Unusual cabins, water leaks, malfunctioning toilets, and faulty air conditioning were among the reported issues.
These issues on the cruise ship prompted the relocation of onboard officers to hotels and other ships.
According to a police statement, initial investigations revealed major hygienic sanitary criticality and severe accommodation defects, which might have led to public supply fraud.
Authorities have detained the vessel, as directed by Brindisi prosecutors, to facilitate further investigations.
The Italian government reportedly spent around 6 million euros ($6.46 million) to rent the ship during the G7 summit.
Police have indicated that they may take legal action against the ship’s owner, though Reuters could not connect with the vessel’s owner.
This incident raises concerns over the management and logistics of the high-profile G7 summit since law enforcement officers are left in terrible circumstances just as foreign leaders assemble in Italy.
