HHLA Launches First Hydrogen Test Field In The Port Of Hamburg

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has opened the first hydrogen-powered test field and refuelling station at the Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) at the Port of Hamburg.

The newly established test field, a combined initiative with industry partners from the Clean Port & Logistics cluster, aims to assess the viability of hydrogen as a reliable energy source for heavy goods vehicles within port operations.

The facility comprises a hydrogen refuelling station capable of supplying empty container stackers, straddle carriers, forklift trucks, reach stackers, tractor units, and trucks with green hydrogen at 350 bar pressure.

Angela Titzrath, CEO of HHLA, emphasized the strategic importance of the test field during the inauguration ceremony, stating that they are thrilled to open the first test field of hydrogen-powered port logistics, allowing to test emerging technologies, collect valuable data, and access results all of which helps to shape’ logistics long term future.

Prominent leaders, including Dr Melanie Leonhard, Hamburg Senator for Economy and Innovation, and Christian Maaß from the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, attended the event.

The presence highlighted the importance of the project in advancing climate-friendly transport solutions and meeting carbon neutrality targets.

Dr Volker Wissing, the Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, emphasised the project’s broader implications, stating that the infrastructure will pave the way for climate-friendly logistics in Germany.

The initiative, funded by a three million euro grant from the Federal Ministry, intends to accelerate the adoption of emissions-free logistics and port operations.

It supports the HHLA’s Balanced Logistics sustainability plan, which aims to achieve climate neutrality across all its operations by 2040 through extensive electrification and the integration of hydrogen technology.

HHLA works with over 40 global partners, including equipment manufacturers and green hydrogen producers, under the Clean Port and Logistics project to develop and test hydrogen-powered solutions.

The cluster conducts practical trials and simulations to optimize the use of hydrogen in port handling and heavy lift logistics and drive innovation and operational efficiency.

HHLA’s investment in hydrogen infrastructure supports its operational goals and establishes Hamburg as a center for sustainable logistics.

The public hydrogen refueling station encourages other companies to explore and adopt environmentally friendly transport technologies.
