MoU Signed For 200,000 Ton Ammonia-fueled Bulk Carriers Study

ITOCHU Corporation, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Nihon Shipyard, and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the design and safety specifications of ammonia-fueled ships.

The initiative is essential to decarbonise the maritime sector by implementing feasible marine fuel solutions.

Ammonia is emerging as a potential marine fuel for lowering carbon emissions in the maritime sector.

The partnership will be centered on developing the design and operational standards for ammonia-powered ships, focusing on safety and commercial viability.

The MPA, an essential regulatory body managing Singapore’s expanding bunkering hub, will provide critical insights to ensure the safe operation of these ships.

The MoU explains Nihon Shipyard’s plan to build 200,000 deadweight ton class bulk carriers with ammonia and dual-fueled engines.

These ships will be constructed under the “Integrated Project for Development and Social Implementation of Ammonia-fueled ships, which is part of the “Green Innovation Fund Project launched by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in October 2021.

ClassNK, as a classification society, will provide expertise in safety and environmental protection and information regarding the alternative design approval process.

The initiative addresses and clarifies the criteria needed for ammonia bunkering in Singapore.
