Icon Offshore Berhad has reported that two of its seafarers were killed and another seriously injured during a tragic incident on its platform supply vessel (PSV) Icon Amara on August 02, 2024.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. local time while the vessel serviced the Sapar Alpha platform near Bintulu.
The police reported that the explosion occurred in the vessel’s engine room, leading to the death of the assistant engineer and an oiler. A second oiler was severely burned, covering over 30% of his body, and is currently being treated at a local hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, the explosion was so tremendous that it blew the engine room door off its hinges, filling the area with smoke.
Crewmembers rushed to the scene, where they found the three people unconscious on the deck.
They were taken to the jetty and then to a nearby hospital, where the two victims lost their lives due to the severe injuries.
The 3,500 dwt Icon Amara, built in 2011, can accommodate up to 60 personnel and is one of two PSVs operated by Icon Offshore. It mainly serves the Sarawak oil and gas fields.
Local authorities criticized Icon Offshore for the delay in issuing a public statement after the incident.
On August 12, 2024, over a week after the accident, the company finally addressed the situation, stating that there was a delay in releasing details about the incident as they were confirming with the client and relevant authorities to ensure the accuracy of the information.
Icon Offshore expressed its condolences to the families of the seafarers who lost their lives and offered its support to the injured seafarers during this challenging period.
The company also claimed that it is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation into the cause of the explosion, though exact details remain undisclosed.
Despite the incident, Icon Offshore believes that the Icon Amara will return to active service once the investigation is completed.
The company informed stakeholders that the vessel and its crew were insured.
