NYK Group To Time-Charter Its First Methanol-fueled Bulk Carrier

NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd, a subsidiary of the NYK Group, has signed a basic agreement with Kambara Kisen to time-charter the first methanol-powered bulk carrier in the NYK Group fleet.

The vessel is being built at Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.’s Tsuneishi facility in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, and will be delivered in the spring of 2025.

The revolutionary vessel has a dual-fuel main engine that can run on methanol and conventional fuel oil. The ship is meant to run mostly on bio-methanol and e-methanol, made from hydrogen derived from renewable energy and recovered carbon dioxide.

By using low-carbon methanol, the NYK Group aims to drastically reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its various operations.

The new bulk carrier will have the highest loading capacity among Ultramax bulkers. Its versatile hull is built to handle a wide range of cargoes, including grain and ore.

The initiative aligns with the NYK Group’s commitment to promoting decarbonization in its fleet and developing sustainable transportation using low-carbon and decarbonized fuels.

The deployment of this methanol-powered bulk carrier is a significant step forward for the NYK Group’s efforts to decrease its carbon footprint and contribute to the global push for sustainable shipping solutions.
