Yemen’s Houthi terrorists have claimed responsibility for a second attack on a Liberian-flagged container ship in the Gulf of Aden on August 30, 2024.
Yemeni military spokesperson Yahya Saree announced the attack on the MV Groton in a televised speech on August 31, 2024, but did not specify the exact timing.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed in an advisory that two missiles exploded on August 30 near the vessel, approximately 130 nautical miles east of Yemen’s Aden.
Despite the explosions, the crew of the MV Groton remained safe, and the vessel reported no damage.
Saree reported that the operation was carried out by missile, naval, and UAV forces. This is the second attack on the ship since it was earlier attacked on August 3, 2024.
The Houthis have continuously targeted commercial shipping using drones and missiles since November 2023 in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. They have reportedly sunk two vessels, killed at least four, and targeted several since the beginning of the attack.
The Houthis have declared that the attacks are in solidarity with the Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
They have pledged to continue their attacks if a cease-fire is not agreed upon.
In one of their most recent operations, the Houthis have launched repeated attacks on the Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion, carrying approximately 1 million barrels of oil.
Additionally, on August 31, 2024, the U.S. Centcom force destroyed an Iranian-backed Houthi UAV and USV in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
The measures were taken to protect the freedom of navigation and improve the safety and security of international waters for U.S., coalition and commercial vessels.
